“Germany is a big country with many layers of governance. The challenge for every ambassador accredited to Germany is to cover everything that happens, economically, politically, culturally, in view of innovations, regions. Germany is a specific country with a very different dynamic due to its own constitutional composition as a federal state with several Länder, where every Land has his own progress and uniqueness. Following events in each Land, maintaining communication and developing bilateral relations requires additional dedication. In my opinion, this is a unique opportunity to explore the German roots, traditions and culture in all colours and boost cooperation with several governments, not just at the federal level. Albania and Germany have excellent political relations and an intensive high-level political dialogue. We appreciate the cooperation within the Berlin Process and the role of Germany as an initiator of the process. Germany remains a very important partner for us, stable and constant towards our perspective to the EU membership.”

„Without a doubt, the sixth floor of KaDeWe – all the restaurants and cafes there - is my favorite spot because I can indulge in delicious food and pastries. And the best part? I get to burn off those calories right after by walking at least 2 kilometers doing some serious window shopping on every floor of the KaDeWe building. It’s the perfect balance: feast now, shop later. Plus, who knew retail therapy could be such a great workout?"

“I think my professional background made it easier. Before becoming Ambassador, I occupied some important positions in the country as minister (almost 7 years); deputy governor at the Burundi Central Bank (5 years) and as a consultant to the United Nations in Central Africa Republic (CAR). Each of the 16 federal States is unique, emphasizing the saying 'Berlin is not Germany, and Germany is not Berlin.' The balance of gender representation in civil society and politics is remarkable. Surprisingly, there are no potholes on the roads, however, the fluctuating internet quality in Berlin was unexpected.“

„In traditionally male-dominated fields like diplomacy, women are increasingly being recognized for their leadership. The ratio of women Ambassadors in Berlin attests to this. Kenya is making strides towards gender parity in leadership roles, including Ambassadorial appointments, through merit and affirmative action. Our constitution provides for a two-thirds gender principle in representation. In my cohort of 41 Ambassadors, there were eleven and seven women Ambassador Heads of Mission and Deputy Heads of Mission respectively. On International Women's Day, our President, H.E. Dr. William Ruto, elevated even more women to be Ambassadors. This is commendable because women bring diverse perspectives crucial for progress. The UN's designation of 24th June as International Day of Women in Diplomacy underscores this. There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women, said former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan. This is an acknowledgment that male and female diplomats can deliver equally. They therefore, must work together irrespective of gender. Overcoming challenges in a male-dominated field requires resilience, hard work, and support from family and colleagues. Political goodwill and divine intervention also play a key role in achieving such positions.“

“It surprises me how Germans have become less punctual and organized. It is a well-known saying that Germans are always on time... well now when we wait for trains, planes, and handymen, I wonder ☺ I am always amazed by the beautiful and diverse nature and cultural heritage of Germany. There are so many wonderful places, cities, and natural resorts to visit. A mandate of four years in Germany is always too short to explore all the beauties of this country. The most disappointing matter, especially for Slovenians, is that in Berlin there are no mountains ☺ We love to hike and climb, so the flatness of Berlin is something we cannot get used to.”

“At first in 2019 when I became an ambassador for the first time (to Japan), I was also young (41). I thought I needed to do my job the same as many of my male colleagues. Then I realized it is much better and more successful if I just behave as I am – many times more relaxed, caring about topics like gender equality, feminist foreign policy, and human rights. Nowadays, there are many female ambassadors and diplomats working in diplomacy, and we empower, help, and learn from each other. I like very much the practice of female ambassador circles/groups in each capital; it is always very interesting and fun to attend.”

“I love my work and I believe there is no other work in the world that is as interesting, diverse, and enriching as diplomacy. However, this work is not kind to family life. This job is still very much linked to traditions and practices developed long ago and in different societies. I believe that if we want more women to become diplomats and ambassadors, the balance between work and family time should be better organized. At home, I have a 6-year-old son and sometimes, I admit, I do cancel evening events when I see that he misses my company and needs me. I think that especially evening and weekend obligations, which are such a usual practice in diplomacy, should be reduced and moved to working hours as much as possible. This would benefit not only women but also male colleagues, who in the contemporary world also have many family obligations and want to spend more time with their families and children.”

“I love spending time in Grunewald, walking, swimming in lakes, or just relaxing at cafes. As we live in Dahlem, I sometimes miss the Berlin city life, but being in nature on weekends gives me more energy for the week ahead.”

“There are so many places with excellent food to go to in Berlin. For everyday life, I adore the restaurant just across our Embassy in Hausvogteiplatz – Goodtime. For special occasions, I would recommend Long March Canteen. As you can see, I love Asian food ☺”

“Among the many pleasant surprises in Germany, I would mention the abundance of well-preserved historical sites and great choirs as among my favorites. I also appreciate the sense of quietude found in many communities.”

“Women are the majority in Sri Lanka's Foreign Service. There is a large number of female Heads of Mission in Berlin. So, I don't feel being a woman is a disadvantage at this stage of my career.”

Favourite restaurant: “Habel am Reichstag”

“There is no doubt that Germany is a leading economic and political power in Europe. It is also considered a major development and humanitarian partner to many of our developing countries. When I first came to Germany, I had a certain perception about the country and its people—that they have a very serious temperament. What indeed surprised me was the diverse setup of the German society. I was surprised to see and meet many nationalities, migrants, and visitors. Walking down the streets in Berlin, one would recognize how diverse and cosmopolitan the city is. I was amazed to see the city of Berlin extending in such a big area; it usually takes time to reach your destinations. I loved the historical monuments, the history and the famous wall, and certainly the Tiergarten! If there is any disappointment I must say, from a personal experience, it is very challenging to find a house or an apartment for rent! Another difficulty is the language barrier when it comes to dealing with documents of banks, contracts, doctors, etc.”

“I am always reluctant to believe in the idea of making ourselves as women a marginalized category, nor less competent actors in society. Women and men complement each other so long as there is equity in opportunities and respect for the role of each and everyone.”

“As a female diplomat and ambassador who has been in the service for 36 years, both inside my country and abroad, I feel I have established myself quite well. As working women and mothers at the same time, I think we have learned how to acquire our rights and be part of the working power in our countries. To be truthful, female diplomats certainly face some challenges, and unless our male counterparts appreciate these challenges, it will be difficult to continue in this profession. It must also be noted that female diplomats can achieve certain goals much better than their male counterparts. In the end, it is my conviction that we should not make this issue a battle between the two sexes. I think women worldwide have established themselves quite remarkably.”

“From experience, it can indeed be difficult to balance family and children with the demanding tasks of being an ambassador. The challenges of everyday life may sometimes help to come up with ‘creative’ solutions to solve pressing situations that may put the female diplomat in a situation where she has to choose between staying with family and children or with the profession. In any case, experiences differ from one another, but we have to bear in mind that women are the cornerstone of the family.”

“I like to walk in the fresh air in my neighborhood, which is a very green area; it also goes without saying that shopping can sometimes reduce the stress! I love discovering places in the city as well.”

“Generally, I like Italian, Turkish, Arabic, and Japanese cuisine. There is a particular restaurant that I like to dine in from time to time, which is a Lebanese restaurant called ‘Caselot’.”

“I love Berlin - its history. In every corner of the city, you are reminded of its past (the Cold War, the East-West conflict, the DDR period, and reunification). I also love its diversity and culture. I was told upon arrival that there are more museums than rainy days in Berlin, which I am grateful for. What has surprised me most is that the reunification of Germany, which many outside Germany have taken for granted, has actually not been fully implemented. The division in mindset and political convictions between the West German and East German Länder remains. This I had not expected, nor fully understood.”

“I do not consider that diplomacy is a 'male domain'. On the contrary, I think that women in many cases can be better diplomats. We can be tough negotiators but also understand political realities by analyzing not only facts and figures but often also using our emotional intelligence to better understand other countries and cultures.”

“Yes, that remains a permanent challenge and not only for an 'Ambassador'. You need an understanding and supportive husband and father to your children, and you need help at home. I will someday write a book about all the 'au pairs' I have had. But all in all, my children have benefited from my diplomatic career. They speak four languages each and have loved my postings, which has provided them today with a large international network of friends and contacts.”
