We offer a new generation of industrialscale vertical indoor farms worldwide, to sustainably produce a never seen variety of plants with a high quality.

We are part of and jointly responsible for this development

By 2050, the population will grow from currently 7.8 to 9.7 billion people. 70% growth of food production is needed to meet future demand. Extreme weather events and climate change, droughts, floods, erosion, contamination, increasing diseases and pest infestations drastically reduce yields in traditional agriculture. 1/3 of the world’s agricultural land used to grow cereals is already affected. On average agricultural products are transported 2,400 km to markets and lose 45% of their nutritional value. Transport is one of the main causes for the waste of about 1.3 billion tons of food annually. Agriculture contributes significantly to climate change and is responsible for almost 20% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. 70% of the world’s water resources are currently used for agriculture. If we continue like this, more than 5 billion people will suffer from water shortages by 2050. Political tensions and conflicts increase and further exacerbate the global food crisis, as unfortunately shows the current example in Ukraine.

What we change: The future of crop production 5.0 is here

BEL offers the solution for a better and more sustainable world with a new generation of Vertical Indoor Farms (growing plants in a vertical shelf-like system, up to a height of 10m, in an enclosed space, protected from the weather, with high-tech LED lighting, in combination with renewable energies). We can thus produce in an indoor controlled environment, independent of the weather, 365 days a year. As a result, yield productivity is 300 times higher than in traditional agriculture. Due to our unique self-sufficient and renewable energy concept and the CO2 supply for plant growth, we have a negative CO2-balance. We can grow all desired (exotic) plant products (food, medicinal and ornamental plants) regionally, thus shortening the transport distances for the customers. BEL’s regional products are fresh, tasty and free of any pesticides and herbicides. Last but not least, we keep all the water needed in a closed water cycle, so that our BEL Climate Chambers (our own term for our patented Vertical Indoor Farm System) use 90% less water than in traditional farming.

Like organic – only trendy, uncompromising and AgTech 5.0

Trendy: Sustainable, resource-minimising production along the entire production chain. The taste, natural compounds and nutrient content of the plants can be influenced by our cultivation method. More bitter substances, less sodium etc.. Imagine a winemaker who is free to choose the slope, the angle of sunlight, the number of hours of sunshine, the cooling influence of a nearby river and the soil conditions which his grapes should be exposed to. And this is done individually for each variety. This is exactly what we do, only differently and reproducibly. We create a “wellness package” for our plants for optimal production results. Healthy and nutritious and 100% enjoyment are guaranteed.

Uncompromising: No pollutants from the environment or the soil (substrate-free cultivation), no pesticides – neitherchemical- synthetic nor “natural” such as copper or nitrogen enrichment as is often used in organic farming, no germs (because there is no soil or pests), clean room for production, which is only entered for inspection in protective suits via hygiene sluices. Always regional. Always in season. No imports. You can’t get fresher 100% nutrients. Even top gastronomes such as Tim Raue (2 Michelin *) rely on the freshness and quality of hydroponic/aeroponic cultivation methods and use the produce in their kitchens for premium enjoyment.

AgTech 5.0: We automate everything via sensors and monitoring, such as the adjustment of the LED light spectra, nutrient solution distribution, CO2 enrichment of the air, humidity and temperature. The global Vertical Indoor Farming market will reach, according to Research and Markets, an estimated value of 75.3 billion USD until 2028. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is 10.9 percent between 2021 and 2028. This means the global Vertical Indoor Farming market grows by 38.9 billion USD in eight years! Meanwhile the European market grows from 10.4 billion USD to approx. 23.3 billion USD. This is equivalent to a global market share of 30.8 percent (CAGR 12.2 percent).
