Enercon has installed wind energy converters for its customers in more than 45 countries, producing as much power in total as around 55 coal-fired power plants. With a tried-and-tested drive system, ground-breaking technological developments and high quality standards, the company is constantly raising the bar in the wind energy industry.
Enercon belongs to the pioneers of a technology that was once ridiculed, but has been one of the fastest-growing types of energy generation for years now. It was the first manufacturer to focus on a gearless drive design, which requires little maintenance and has since become a hallmark of all Enercon wind energy converters. Apart from this basic technical principle, there is not much resemblance between today’s models and the wind turbines of those days. The external dimensions and the power output have since increased manifold. The latest addition is the E-160 EP5 with a rotor diameter of 160 metres.
For a long time, Germany was Enercon’s most important market. However, despite the country’s former role as a pioneer of the energy transition, the framework conditions for onshore wind energy have worsened dramatically here in recent years – so much so that the company is now focussing more than ever on international markets. Countries such as Colombia, Chile and Vietnam have recognised the enormous potential of wind energy as a way to guarantee a reliable, affordable and above all clean power supply. There is also a growing awareness of the benefits of onshore wind energy on the African continent. Technological innovations from companies such as Enercon play an important part in this development by continuously improving efficiency. Global demand for wind energy converters will continue to strongly increase over the next years. In order to meet the Paris climate goals, fossil fuels in industry and transport will have to be replaced by electricity from renewable energies. Many countries across the globe have taken up the cause of promoting clean hydrogen, which also necessitates faster wind energy growth.
The further ambitious expansion of wind energy is thus necessary from the point of view of climate policy, and it also makes good economic sense. The levelised cost of energy for wind energy converters has been continuously decreasing over the past years. Companies like Enercon are continuing to work at full stretch to improve the efficiency of their wind energy converters. In addition to this, the wind energy sector is a motor for the economy and a driver of innovation all at once. In order to continue this development, reliable and conducive regulatory frameworks are needed. The right framework conditions will bring added value to countries and create jobs in the areas of installation, service and administration. Such conditions include technology-specific target paths to increase the share of renewable energy, transparent and efficient approval processes, and a reduction of subsidies for fossil fuels. These are not just the prerequisites for the success of wind energy, but also essentially form the foundations for a sustainable energy sector.
In keeping with the mission statement ‘Energy for the World’, Enercon is committed to promoting renewable solutions for supplying power the whole world over. With branches in 26 countries and a global decentralised service network, Enercon is available as a competent point of contact to answer any questions relating to wind energy.
