100 years of the Planetarium, 10 years of the Stiftung Planetarium Berlin

15.06.2026
The 100th anniversary of the Berlin Planetarium is also a story of the pioneering spirit in Berlin, which continues to shape our city today as an innovative center of science and make it visible on the international stage.

The first Berlin planetarium was established in 1926—100 years ago—at the Berlin Zoo, making it the first of ten planetariums worldwide. The Berlin Planetarium Foundation brings together the capital's astronomical institutions: the Archenhold Observatory and the Wilhelm Foerster Observatory are among Germany's most historic public observatories, while the Planetarium at Insulaner and the Zeiss Major Planetarium, as Europe's most modern science theaters, offer innovative and impactful ways of communicating science.

To mark the foundation's 10th anniversary, numerous guests from the fields of science, politics, and culture attended, including Berlin's Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner, the Senator for Education, Youth and Family, Katharina Günther-Wünsch, and Germany's first female astronaut in space, Rabea Rogge—a native of Berlin. Tim Florian Horn, Chairman of the Berlin Planetarium Foundation, emphasized the foundation's central role in Berlin's educational and cultural landscape in his welcoming speech.

The world premiere of the full-dome production on June 15 explores one of the central questions of modern physics: What is time? From humanity's earliest calendars to Einstein's theory of relativity, it takes audiences on a visually stunning journey through a universe without an absolute present, ultimately asking how we experience our own moment in the cosmos.

It is a magnificent production and definitely worth seeing.
