107th Anniversary of Latvia's Independence
In mid-November, Latvia celebrated its National Day at the Representation of Schleswig-Holstein in Berlin.

In her speech, the Latvian Ambassador, H.E. Alda Vanaga, emphasised that freedom and independence must never be taken for granted. “As a state on the eastern border of the EU and NATO that endured almost fifty years of Soviet occupation, we know very well what to expect from our imperialistic neighbour. We will continue tirelessly to inform our partners and warn them,” she said. Security remained Latvia’s highest priority, which is why the country supports Ukraine comprehensively and is increasing its defence spending. Latvian society, she noted, stands firmly behind this course. She also highlighted Latvia’s international achievements, including its seat on the UN Security Council and its first Oscar for the animated film Flow. Relations with Germany were close: political visits, expanding economic cooperation and large business delegations were strengthening this partnership. Investments by companies such as Lufthansa and Rheinmetall further underscored confidence in Latvia. Cooperation with German federal states, particularly Schleswig-Holstein, was also deepening.
Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister-President Daniel Günther, in his speech, honoured Latvia’s hard-won independence in 1918 and the sacrifices made during fifty years of Soviet occupation. He stressed that the occupation of Latvia by Nazi Germany and the crimes committed against the Jewish population serve as a reminder and a mandate to combat antisemitism and extremism. Günther also recalled the historic ties between the regions, for example during the Hanseatic era, when Lübeck and Riga were closely linked through trade—cooperation that continues today between universities, in business and across the Baltic Sea ports. He concluded by calling for optimism, solidarity and joie de vivre, particularly in challenging times.
